El Chalten
El Chalten is located in the Department of Lake Argentino, in the confluence of River Vueltas and River Fitz Roy in the area of Los Glaciares National Park. In this spot the magic of the glaciers combine with hidden lagoon, farms, Lake Viedma and the magnetic presence of Mount Fitz Roy.
It is 220 km away from El Calafate and 200 people live there. It's located next to Lake Viedma and its reservation. It's an appropriate place for trekking, and that's why it has been declared Capital City of trekking. The Torre Hill, the Fitz Roy Mount and the Glaciers Viedma, Upsala and Moyano are a must see.
Fitz Roy
The Fitz Roy is one of the most impressive granite formations and one of the most beautiful peaks of the world. This mountain is so high that it can be seen many kilometres away. Its harmonious shape, its icy appearance and its contact with the clouds have made the Fitz Roy the ideal mountain for experts to climb. On its back part there is the mysterious world of the South Continental Ice, one of the bigger glaciers of the world. The Tehuelches, an aborigine group, gave the peak the name of El Chaltén, which means volcano, probably because they mistook clouds for smoke.
Laguna del Desierto
Laguna del Desierto was the epicentre of one of the last territorial conflicts between Argentina and Chile. It feeds from the flowing that comes from the Andes and is hidden between forests and snowy mountains. The road that goes to this lagoon runs along River Vueltas that flows between snowy peaks and mysterious woods. Ducks, cows, cauquenes and bandurrias abound on the estuaries of the river. |
