- Uros Island - Las Chullpas
Breakfast at the hotel. We will set out
for Puerto de Puno sailing on motorboats
to Uros Island, where the inhabitants
of Lake Titicaca have the same customs
and culture as their ancestors.
Uros Island is formed by a group of large
reed floating islands inhabited by the
native people called Uros. These people
are descendants of one of the America's
most ancient cultures. Their economy is
based on fishing and hunting, although
they devote much time to doing wool tapestry
and stuffing animals.
These islands are part of the Titicaca
National Reserve. In the afternoon, we
will go to the archeological region of
Sillustani situated near Puno at 4,000
meters above sea level. We will see the
Chullpas, which are stunning funeral monuments
(anciently called necropolis) built by
Indians from the Altiplano and surrounded
by the picturesque Umayo Lagoon.
The Chullpas are quadrangular and circular
structures of up to 12 meters high, and
how they were done is a challenge for
the balance laws because they are smaller
at the bottom than at the top.
